Kinesiology
tape
What is it?
It is an
elastic, adhesive tape which is not restricting like athletic tape. A good
kinesiology tape allows for multiple consecutive days of wearing (5-7 days). It is
available in a variety of different colors and patterns. These colors and
patterns do not indicate that the tape is different from another in any way,
but purely for the wearer’s enjoyment and preference. Yes, you can wear it in
the shower, pool, hot tub, and work outs without having it come off easily.

How does it work?
Kinesiology tape reduces pain. It does this by alleviating discomfort and
facilitating lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin. This
lifting affect forms convolutions (wrinkles) in the skin which increases
interstitial space and allowing for a decrease in inflammation, reducing
pressure while enabling a more effective flow of blood and lymphatic fluid in
and out of the target area.
Decreases fatigue in muscles by stimulating muscles around a rehabbing area to step in and
begin working correctly again.
Normalizes muscle tone by waking up muscles and calming down overactive muscles
which allows tissues to heal properly.
Kinesiology
tape distributes stress throughout
the body. Using it’s elastic and recoil properties, kinesiology tape can
distribute stress to other tissues and even bone. Yes, it can help improve
posture by this gentle elastic reminder, too!

What type of kinesiology tape do we
use in the office?
RockTape (www.rocktape.com) is our preferred
kinesiology tape in the office. It is 97% cotton and 3% nylon. The adhesive is
a hypo-allergenic, acrylic-based and contains no latex. It has the best
adhesive life for our patients, and also has very little-to no reactions. Dr.
Jeni has reactions to adhesives, and she does not react to RockTape.
There are
different patterns and ways to putting on kinesiology tape. This mostly depends on what is
being taped and what condition is being treated. Because the tape is elastic,
it is important not to have it too stretched because blisters can develop if it
has been applied improperly. Blisters can also occur if the tape is taken off prematurely.
Additional Relievers
We also like
to use RockSauce (warming gel) and RockSauce Chill (cooling gel) in
conjunction with kinesiology tape if we’re addressing a pain condition. These
are a warming or cooling gel which works with the tape. While other gels will
soak in to the tape and not be helpful, RockSauce/RockSauce Chill still
provides benefits with the tape. The two together can create a pain patch,
almost, and provide greater relief together.
